Choosing a photovoltaic street light is a system decision. Flexible PV and conventional solar configurations should be compared against the same road layout, lighting schedule and installation environment. Begin with the project conditions rather than the appearance of the pole.
Show the supplier where the lights will be installed and identify nearby trees, walls and buildings. Ask how the proposed photovoltaic surface will be oriented, how much area is available and whether the mounting method limits exposure. A different panel form does not remove the need to check shading.
A complete quotation should identify panel output, battery voltage and capacity, LED configuration and the controller schedule. Ask the supplier to explain how these elements meet the required nightly hours and backup target at the chosen location. Avoid treating peak panel output or advertised battery capacity as a guarantee of all-weather performance.
| Project question | What to check in both proposals |
|---|---|
| Solar exposure | Orientation, mounting area, local weather assumptions and shading |
| Lighting task | Road width, mounting height, spacing, operating hours and lighting distribution |
| Energy storage | Usable battery energy, backup assumptions, temperature limits and replacement access |
| Pole installation | Mounting drawings, foundation requirements, finish and applicable structural documentation |
| Control system | Time control, dimming, remote access, communications and platform requirements |
| Service plan | Access to components, spare parts, maintenance instructions and warranty scope |
Remote management can be useful for a group of lights, but the project must support the proposed communications method. Ask which controller and platform are included, whether connectivity or service fees apply and how the lights behave when communication is unavailable.
Request drawings showing how photovoltaic elements, cables, batteries and luminaires are mounted. Identify components that can be replaced and confirm that the maintenance team can reach them safely. Compare the replacement process and agreed spare-parts supply along with the initial price.
There is no universal winner. Evaluate the final configuration, available mounting area, site conditions, maintenance requirements and project budget.
Request model-specific supporting documents and a project configuration. Efficiency is one factor; lighting hours, usable storage and site exposure also matter.
